Desolator is a tier 14 destroyer used by the Fringe Systems Resistance.

Tactics

A tough FSR ship with strong defense and offense, this ship is fairly difficult, but can still be beaten fairly easily with the right approach. If you're using deck cannons or HE missiles, it's best to target the areas around Desolator's chainguns - they're well defended by multiple shields each, but your weapons will fare better against them than trying to get through Desolator's thick armor. You will most likely want to target the parts behind each chaingun turret, instead of the body of the chaingun - your weapons can hit the extended turret, but the rest of each chaingun is behind lots of armor. For those using strong anti-armor weapons, like ions, chainguns, or nukes, it is most likely better to instead attempt to bore through Desolator's armor. Depending on your weapon setup, it may be easier to hit Desolator's sides all at once, or you can line up your barrel with the exact centre of Desolator's armor, where it is thinner, and fire straight down there. You'll have to weather all of Desolator's incoming fire in the meantime, but once your weapons hit Desolator's bridge, the fight will be over immediately, and with most of the ship intact.

Desolator is rather powerful in direct confrontations, which is why you shouldn't confront it directly. While ramming Desolator's front accomplishes effectively nothing at all, ramming its side is extremely effective - while its sides are defended, they are defended much less than its front. Additionally, only half of Desolator's chainguns will be able to fire, and a few of its deckguns may be blocked by each other. Strafing Desolator gives you the same results, however its chainguns will be stronger as they can focus fire, and its deckguns weaker as they will be less accurate and more susceptible to point defense or flak at longer distances. Desolator can be kited fairly easily, but it is still somewhat fast, and will only get faster as you destroy its damage - don't get sloppy. Flanking Desolator is extremely effective - you can quickly and easily destroy its chainguns or engines and circumvent its frontal armor.

Trivia

  • This ship is a predecessor to Desecrator, with a similar name, same general layout and weapons, and the same paint style, though they have different colours.
