Hydra is a tier 11 combat frigate used by the Fringe Systems Resistance.

Tactics

A successor to Backup , the Hydra is a similar tactical conundrum, as while its cannons are exposed and easy to destroy, doing so will also reveal its four well-defended nukes. Being wider than its predecessor, Hydra is also somewhat difficult to strafe, especially as its row of small shields extends across its entire body. Strafing is still highly recommended in order to dodge Hydra's nukes. Missiles of any kind are not recommended due to its point defense and its rather spread-out design, which invalidates nukes. As its cannons are very easy to destroy, any weapons will work, but you'll need powerful anti-shield abilities to destroy Hydra's nukes. Disruptors are best for this - EMPs will either get shot down or harmlessly collide with Hydra's long armor pieces that house its weapons. Chainguns will also be quite effective as they can't be shot down, cam quickly burst through Hydra's cannons, and can also burst through its layer of shields. Flak as a defense will be extremely effective, as Hydra's nukes are close together enough to be shot down by only one flak gun per pair of nukes.

Trivia

  • Two other Fringe Systems Resistance ships, Backup and Hecatoncheires , precede and succeed Hydra respectively, with all three sharing the same paint style and unusual weapon placement.
  • This ship is named after the mythological Hydra, a monster with many heads that grew two more when one was cut off. The name references Hydra starting to use stronger weapons as it takes damage. This Greek mythological naming is shared with Hecatoncheires, but not Backup.
